How it works
The page box is changed, not the content
PDF describes a visible area for each page. Cropping moves that boundary in, so the page displays and prints smaller. Nothing is redrawn and no quality is lost.
Percentages, not millimetres
A trim is a share of the page, so the same setting works whether the document is A4, Letter or a phone screenshot.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Cropping is not redaction. What is outside the crop is still in the file and can be recovered by anyone who moves the boundary back.
- For a scan with an uneven border, crop the largest amount you can accept and check the tightest page before committing.
- A 45% trim from opposite edges leaves a tenth of the page. That is the limit, and it is there so a crop cannot produce a page with nothing on it.
- If you want the trimmed area really gone, crop first and then convert the pages to images.

Things people ask
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read into memory in your browser and everything happens there. There is no upload endpoint, and nothing on the page that can read your content, and a Content Security Policy allows no upload destination at all.
That also means the file never sits on someone else’s server waiting to be deleted, which is the part most people are actually worried about with a contract or an invoice.
Is the cropped area actually removed?
No. Cropping changes the visible boundary of the page; the content outside it is still stored in the document. That is how PDF works, and it is worth knowing before you use cropping to hide something sensitive.
To remove it for good, crop the PDF and then convert the pages to images, which keeps only what is visible.
Will the file get smaller?
Barely. Nothing is deleted, so the size is more or less unchanged.
