How it works
Drawn into the page
The text becomes part of the page content, not an annotation layered on top, so it survives being printed, flattened or opened in a viewer that ignores annotations.
Opacity is the whole trick
A watermark has to be visible without making the document unreadable. Around 15-25% is where most land; the preview settings let you find yours.
Diagonal, centred, or along the bottom
Diagonal is the classic draft stamp. Along the bottom suits a copyright or a filename.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Grey at low opacity reads as a watermark. Black at low opacity often just looks like a printing fault.
- Keep the text short — a long line at a large size runs off the page rather than wrapping.
- A watermark deters casual copying. It is not security: anyone determined can remove it, and it does not stop the text underneath being selected.
- For sending the same document to several people, stamping each with the recipient’s name is a genuinely useful habit.

Things people ask
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read into memory in your browser and everything happens there. There is no upload endpoint, and nothing on the page that can read your content, and a Content Security Policy allows no upload destination at all.
That also means the file never sits on someone else’s server waiting to be deleted, which is the part most people are actually worried about with a contract or an invoice.
Can the watermark be removed?
By someone who wants to, yes. It is drawn into the page rather than added as an annotation, which makes it much harder than deleting a layer — but a PDF is an editable format and nothing stamped onto it is permanent.
Treat it as a deterrent and a label, not as protection.
Can I use an image or a logo?
Not on this tool — it stamps text. To place a logo or a signature image, use the PDF signing tool, which puts an image where you click.
