How it works
Pages are redrawn, not repacked
Each page is rendered and stored as a JPEG at the resolution you choose. That is where the saving comes from: a scan captured at 600 DPI carries several times more detail than anyone will ever look at.
Physical size is preserved
An A4 page stays A4, and the page order and count are unchanged. Only the number of pixels behind each page changes.
It refuses to make things worse
If rebuilding would produce a larger file than the original — which happens with documents that are already efficient — you are told, and the original is left alone rather than replaced with something bigger.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- This is at its best on scans and photo-heavy documents, where the pages were pictures already and nothing is lost.
- On a text document exported from Word or a design tool, the saving is smaller and the cost is real — the text becomes an image. Keep your original.
- If the result is still too big, try "Smallest file", or split the document and send it in parts.
- Compressing an already-compressed PDF a second time only degrades it further. Go back to the original.

Things people ask
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole thing runs in your browser, which is unusual for PDF compression and is the entire point — the documents people most want to compress are the ones they least want to upload.
Will the text still be selectable?
No, and that is the trade-off. Each page becomes an image of itself, so text is no longer text and links no longer work.
For a scanned document this costs nothing, because it was already a picture. For an exported document it is a real loss, so keep the original.
Why did my file get bigger?
Because it was already efficient — a text-only PDF is mostly instructions, which are far smaller than pictures of the same pages. When that happens you are told and given nothing back, rather than handed a larger file called "compressed".
How much smaller will it get?
For a high-resolution scan, often 80-95% smaller. For a document that was already mostly text, sometimes not at all. The result is shown before you download it.
