Flip text upside down
Type something and get it upside down. The characters are substituted and the whole string reversed, so it reads correctly when you turn the screen over.
These are different Unicode characters, not formatting. They paste anywhere, which is the appeal — but screen readers announce them as mathematical symbols or skip them entirely, and search engines do not match them against the ordinary word. Good for a display name, wrong for body text.

How it works
These are characters, not formatting
A “bold” letter here is a distinct Unicode character that happens to look bold. That is why it survives being pasted into a bio or a username where real formatting would be stripped — and it is also why a screen reader announces it as mathematical notation or skips it, and why search engines do not match it against the ordinary word. Fine for a display name; wrong for anything that has to be read aloud or found.
Reversed as well as flipped
Substituting the characters is only half of it. Reading an upside-down line goes right to left, so the string is reversed too — without that, the letters look inverted but the word is backwards.
The substitutes are unrelated characters
Inverted "a" is a Latin turned alpha; inverted "e" is a schwa. They are borrowed from phonetic alphabets and other scripts because they happen to look right, which is why a few letters are only approximate.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- A few letters have no good inverted form and are left as they are — the effect still reads, but it is not perfect.
- Flipping twice returns the original text, which is a quick way to check the output is what you meant.

Because no Unicode character looks like their inverted form. Rather than substitute something that looks wrong, those are left alone.
