How it works

A hand-drawn font

Each letter is written out rather than generated, because ASCII art is judged entirely on how it looks and every letter needs its own decisions about width and spacing. Five rows, which is the smallest that stays legible.

Unsupported characters are skipped

A placeholder glyph in the middle of a banner looks like a mistake; a gap reads as deliberate. So anything the font cannot draw is left out rather than substituted.

Practical advice

Getting a better result

  • Keep it short. The output is five rows tall and grows wide quickly — more than about eight characters will wrap in most terminals.
  • Use a monospaced font wherever the result is going, or the columns will not line up.
  • For a README, put it in a fenced code block so the spacing survives.

Which characters can it draw?

A to Z, 0 to 9, and a few punctuation marks — space, full stop, hyphen, exclamation and question marks. Anything else is skipped.

Why does it look wrong when I paste it?

Almost always because the destination is not using a monospaced font. Block-letter art depends on every character being the same width.
