How it works
A letter is any alphabetic character
In any script. Accented Latin letters count, and so do Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew and CJK characters — the test is whether Unicode classifies it as a letter, not whether it appears in the English alphabet. A tool that counts only A–Z reports “café” as three letters, which is wrong in a way that matters for anyone not writing in English.
Everything else is separated out
Digits, punctuation and symbols are counted together as their own figure, so the three numbers on screen — letters, characters without spaces, characters with spaces — add up in a way you can check rather than having to trust.

Unicode-aware
Accents, non-Latin scripts and emoji are all handled properly. An emoji is one character, not two, because it is counted by symbol rather than by storage unit.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- For crossword and puzzle work, the letters figure is the one you want — it ignores the spaces and hyphens that make a phrase look longer than it is.
- For social media and meta descriptions, use the character counter instead: those limits count every character including spaces and punctuation.
- If letters and characters-without-spaces differ by a lot, your text is mostly numbers or punctuation — worth a look if you expected prose.

Things people ask
Do accented letters count?
Yes. “Café” is four letters, and the same applies to any alphabetic character in any script — Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and CJK all count. Tools that check only for A–Z get this wrong.
Are numbers counted as letters?
No. Digits are counted separately, alongside punctuation and symbols, so you can see both figures without having to work one out from the other.
