Check keyword density without chasing a number

Paste your page copy to see which words and phrases carry it, as a share of the total. Two- and three-word phrases too, because that is usually what a target keyword actually is.

Phrase length

Density is a share of every word in the text, which is the figure SEO guidance is written about.

How it works

01

Density is a share of every word

A two-word phrase appearing ten times in a thousand-word page is 2% — twenty words out of a thousand. Dividing by the number of phrases instead would report 1% for the same text, and that is the mistake that makes tools disagree with each other. The figure here is the one SEO guidance is written about.

02

Phrases are built after filtering

When common words are ignored, the words on either side of a dropped one join up. That is what makes phrase density work on real sentences — “the best coffee in London” yields “best coffee” and “coffee London” rather than nothing.

03

There is no number to hit

Search engines stopped rewarding a particular density many years ago, and writing to hit one produces copy that reads badly. What this is genuinely useful for is the opposite: spotting a phrase repeated so often that a reader would notice.

What it does

One, two and three-word phrases

Switch between them in a click. Most target keywords are two or three words, which single-word counting cannot see at all.

Percentage and count together

The percentage for comparison, the raw count for sanity — a 3% density on a 90-word page is three mentions, which is a different situation from 3% of 3,000 words.

Filler filtered by default

So the list shows terms rather than grammar. It can be turned off if you need the raw picture.

Nothing is uploaded

Unpublished page copy stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Practical advice

Getting a better result

  • If a phrase is over about 3%, read the page aloud. If it sounds repetitive to you it will to a reader, and that matters more than the number.
  • Check two-word phrases before single words — “coffee” tells you less than “speciality coffee”.
  • Density says nothing about placement. A keyword in the title and first paragraph does more than the same keyword repeated in the footer.

Questions

Things people ask

What is a good keyword density?

There is no target worth writing towards. The idea that a particular percentage helps rankings is a holdover from search engines of twenty years ago; modern ones read pages semantically, and copy written to hit a density reads worse. Use this to catch over-repetition, not to reach a figure.

Why does this show a different percentage from another tool?

Almost always because of what it divides by. This reports a phrase’s share of all words in the text — a two-word phrase appearing ten times in a thousand words is 2%. Tools that divide by the number of phrases instead report half that for identical copy.
