Calculators & Time

Convert a time between zones

Pick a date, a time and two zones. Daylight saving is applied for the date you chose rather than for today, which is what makes a meeting scheduled across a clock change land at the right hour.

Zones and offsets come from your browser’s own copy of the IANA time zone database, so daylight saving is applied correctly for the date you choose rather than for today. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How it works

01

The zone database comes from your browser

Every modern browser carries the IANA time zone database, which is what makes this possible without a server or a shipped copy of the rules. It also means the data is as current as your browser is.

02

Daylight saving is per date, not per zone

New York is five hours behind UTC in January and four in July. A converter that applies today’s offset to a date in six months is wrong by an hour for anything spanning a clock change — which is exactly the case where people reach for a converter.

03

The entered time is interpreted in the source zone

A date-and-time field carries no zone, so the instant is found by searching for the moment whose local time in the source zone matches what you typed. That is done in two passes, because a single pass gives the wrong answer for times near a daylight-saving boundary.

What it does

Every IANA zone

The full list your browser knows, which is several hundred.

Abbreviations shown

EST or EDT, GMT or BST — so you can see which side of a clock change the date falls on.

Starts where you are

Your own zone and the current time are filled in, so the common case needs one change rather than four.

Runs in your browser

No account and no upload — what you type is never sent anywhere. Analytics records that the tool was opened, never what you put into it.

Practical advice

Getting a better result

  • Check the abbreviation on both sides. EST and EDT are an hour apart, and seeing which one applies tells you whether the clocks have changed.
  • For a recurring meeting, check a date in both summer and winter — the offset between two zones is not always constant, because countries change clocks on different dates.
  • UTC never changes, which is why servers and logs use it. It is the safest zone to agree a time in.

Questions

Things people ask

Does it handle daylight saving?

Yes, per date. The offset is calculated for the date you entered rather than for today, so a time in July converts with summer time and one in January does not.

Why do two zones change their difference during the year?

Because countries move their clocks on different dates, and some do not move them at all. The UK and the US are five hours apart for most of the year but four for a couple of weeks in spring, when one has changed and the other has not.
