How it works
It carries on past the date
A countdown that hits zero and freezes has stopped being useful at exactly the moment you look at it after the event. This switches to counting up, so "three days since" is as available as "three days until".

The target is interpreted in your local time zone, which is what the date picker means. For an event in another zone, convert it first.

Browsers throttle timers in tabs you are not looking at — often to once a minute — so anything that counts its own ticks loses time. This compares against the system clock on every update, so switching tabs changes nothing about when it finishes.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Nothing is stored, so the countdown does not survive a refresh. Bookmark the event date somewhere if it matters.
- For counting down a duration rather than to a date, the online timer is the tool — it also makes a sound when it finishes.

Your device’s. The date and time you enter are taken as local, which matches what the picker shows you.
