How it works
It is a real segmentation model
U²-Net, about four and a half megabytes, downloaded the first time you press the button and then kept by your browser. It produces a saliency map — for every pixel, how likely it is to be part of the subject — rather than picking colours the way a magic-wand tool does. That is why it can separate a person from a busy street.
The mask is small, so the edge is softened
The network works at 320×320 whatever you give it, and that mask is then stretched to your image’s real size. A 320-pixel mask has no business claiming to know exactly where a strand of hair ends, so the edge gets a few pixels of softness. That is honesty about precision, not a cosmetic filter.
One subject, not a scene
This kind of model is trained to find the one thing a photograph is about. Give it a portrait, an animal or a product and it does well. Give it a landscape, a crowd or a flat-lay of twelve objects and there is no single subject to find — the tool says so rather than handing back something arbitrary.

Transparent PNG, or a colour behind
Always saved as PNG, because a cut-out written as JPG has its transparency filled in and the whole point is lost.
A cut-off you can move
Lower keeps more of the edges and more of the old background with them; higher cuts tighter and starts eating hair. Which is right depends on the photo, so it is a slider rather than a guess.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- A subject that contrasts with its background cuts far better than one that blends in. This is the same advice as for a green screen, and for the same reason.
- Hair, fur and anything semi-transparent are where every automatic cut-out struggles. Raise the edge softness rather than the cut-off when they look wrong.
- Crop to the subject first if the photo is mostly background. The model looks at the whole frame, so less clutter means a cleaner mask.
- If the result is nearly empty, the photo probably has no single subject. That is a limit of this kind of model, not a setting you can fix.
- Put a colour behind it if the cut-out is going somewhere that cannot show transparency — a JPG upload, or an old email client.

Things people ask
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The model is downloaded to your browser and the photo is processed there. Nothing about the image is sent anywhere, which is the main reason to use this rather than one of the API-backed services.
Why is the first run slow?
It is fetching the runtime and the model — about nineteen megabytes together. That happens once, and your browser caches it; after that each image takes a few seconds.
How good is it compared to the paid tools?
Close on clear subjects, behind on hair and fine edges. The paid services run much larger models on their own servers and often add a second matting pass. This runs a 4.5 MB model on your laptop, and the trade is exactly what you would expect.
Is there a watermark or a limit?
Neither. There is no account, no per-image charge and nothing stamped on the output.
Why did it cut out the wrong thing?
The model finds the most visually prominent object. If the background is brighter or busier than your subject, it can pick that instead. Cropping tighter is usually the fix.
