How it works
Flipping is a negative scale
The canvas is scaled by -1 along one axis, which reflects the drawing about its own centre. No pixel is invented or blended, so the mirrored image contains exactly the same information as the original, in the opposite order.
Both directions at once is a 180° turn
Mirroring left-to-right and top-to-bottom together produces the same result as rotating the picture 180°. Both toggles are here anyway, because it is easier to try it than to work it out.
Rotation is on the same page
The angle controls sit alongside, since the two operations share a canvas pass. Doing them together means the image is encoded once rather than twice, which matters for JPG and WebP where every encode costs a little quality.

Save in any of three formats
PNG when the image has transparency or flat colour, JPG for photographs, WebP when you want both. The quality slider appears only for the formats where it means something.
No pixel is recalculated
A flip is lossless in the shape of the image. Save as PNG and the result is the same photograph, reflected, with nothing thrown away.
The picture never leaves your computer
Everything here is drawn on a canvas in your own browser. There is no upload and no account, and the picture itself is never sent anywhere — which for a photograph of your family, your passport or your unreleased product is the only arrangement worth having. Analytics records that the tool was opened, never what you opened it on.
Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Front cameras usually mirror the preview but not the saved file, or the other way round. If a selfie looks wrong and you cannot say why, a horizontal flip is almost always the reason.
- Designers flip a layout to check its balance — the eye stops reading and starts seeing shapes, which makes a lopsided composition obvious.
- Anything with text, a logo or a number plate should not be mirrored. It will be quietly unreadable, and readers notice long before they work out why.
- A vertical flip is rarely what someone means by "flip". If you want a photo the right way up but turned around, that is a horizontal flip, or a 180° rotation.
- Flipping a portrait so the subject faces into the page rather than off the edge is an old layout trick, and it works — as long as the subject has no visible writing on them.

Things people ask
What is the difference between flipping and rotating?
Rotating turns the picture; flipping reflects it. A rotated photograph could have been taken by tilting the camera. A mirrored one could not — it is the view from behind the glass, and anything asymmetric in it is now the wrong way round.
Does flipping lose any quality?
Not in the pixels: they are reordered, not recalculated. Saving as JPG re-encodes the file and costs a little, as any JPG save does. Save as PNG if you want to be certain nothing was lost.
Why does my selfie look wrong after flipping?
Because you are used to seeing yourself in a mirror, which is already reversed. The camera records what everyone else sees. Whichever version looks strange to you is usually the one that looks normal to them.
Can I flip and rotate in one go?
