How it works
The outline is the whole trick
A caption has to be readable over whatever the picture happens to contain — a white sky at the top, a dark jacket at the bottom, and everything in between. No single colour manages that. A heavy stroke around each letter does, which is why every meme has one and why it is on by default here.
Stroke first, then fill
The outline is drawn before the letter rather than after it. Drawn afterwards, the stroke eats inwards and thins the shape of the type; drawn first, it sits cleanly behind. It is a small detail that separates captions that look right from ones that look slightly wrong.
Long lines wrap themselves
Text is measured against the width of the picture and broken between words. A word longer than the whole line is left to overflow rather than hyphenated, because a hyphenated caption reads as a mistake.

Every keystroke redraws the picture. There is no preview button, because a caption is something you adjust by looking at it.
No watermark, ever

The text size is a percentage of the picture’s height, so 9% looks the same on a phone screenshot and on a full-resolution photograph.
Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Keep each line short. Two or three words at the top and a punchline at the bottom is the format; a full sentence shrinks to fit and stops being readable.
- Impact ships with Windows and macOS. If you are on Linux and it looks wrong, Arial Black is the closest of the alternatives in the list.
- ALL CAPS is on by default because it is the convention, but lowercase reads as a different and often funnier register. Both are one click away.
- Save as JPG for anything you are posting to social media — the platforms will re-encode it anyway, and starting from PNG just makes the upload slower.
- If the caption sits over a busy part of the picture, move the crop rather than the text. The cropper on this site can shift the framing so the top and bottom are calmer.

Things people ask
Is there a watermark on the result?
No. The image you download contains your picture and your captions and nothing else. There is no branding, no corner logo and no sign-up.
Why is the font not Impact on my computer?
Impact ships with Windows and macOS but not with most Linux distributions, and the page cannot install a font. When it is missing the browser falls back to the next typeface in the list, which is Arial Black and then the system sans.
Can I put text in the middle of the image?
This tool does the classic two-line layout, top and bottom. For free placement anywhere on the picture, the watermark tool lets you position text in any of nine places with your own colour and angle.
Are there meme templates?
No, deliberately. Hosting a template gallery would mean fetching a stranger’s images into the page every time you opened it. Your own picture is the only image here, and it never leaves your computer.
