How it works
One dimension is usually enough
With proportions locked, typing a width fills in the height for you. That is almost always what you want: a photograph has a shape, and a resize that changes it stretches faces. Unlock it only when you genuinely need a fixed box and are willing to accept the distortion.
Both dimensions means "fit inside"
Give a width and a height together and the image is fitted inside that box rather than filled to it, so nothing is cropped and nothing overflows. A 1000×500 photo asked for 400×400 comes out 400×200 — the width binds first, and the height follows.
Enlarging is refused unless you insist
Asking for 4000px from an 800px source cannot add detail; the canvas interpolates between the pixels that exist and the result is bigger and blurrier. So the request is clamped to the original and the page says so. There is a checkbox for the cases where you want it anyway — printing at a known viewing distance, for instance — but it should be a decision, not an accident.

By dimensions for "it must be 1200px for the site", by percentage for "make it about half". Both are the same operation; forcing you to do the arithmetic for one of them would just be rude.
The preview is the result
What you see is a real render at the settings you have chosen, not a CSS-scaled placeholder. Sharpening, softening and colour banding all show up where they will show up in the file.
High-quality downscaling
The canvas is set to its best smoothing before anything is drawn, which is the difference between a downscale that looks like a photograph and one that looks like a screenshot of one.
The picture never leaves your computer
Everything here is drawn on a canvas in your own browser. There is no upload and no account, and the picture itself is never sent anywhere — which for a photograph of your family, your passport or your unreleased product is the only arrangement worth having. Analytics records that the tool was opened, never what you opened it on.
Practical advice
Getting a better result
- For a website, decide the largest size the image will ever be displayed at and resize to twice that. Double covers high-density screens; more than double is wasted bytes.
- Resize before you compress, not after. Compressing a 6000px photo and then shrinking it throws away the work the compressor did.
- If the result must be an exact box — a product grid, say — resize to fit first and then crop, rather than unlocking the proportions and stretching.
- PNG for anything with flat colour, text or transparency. JPG or WebP for photographs, where PNG will be several times larger for no visible gain.
- Percentages are easier to judge for a batch of images that started at different sizes, since 50% means the same thing to all of them.

Things people ask
Will resizing make my image blurry?
Making it smaller will not — there is more information than the new size needs, so the result is sharp. Making it larger will, because the extra pixels have to be invented from the ones nearby. That is why enlarging is off by default here.
Does resizing reduce the file size?
Almost always, and usually by a lot: halving both dimensions leaves a quarter as many pixels. If you want to be deliberate about the trade-off, resize here and then run it through the image compressor, which shows the saving as you move the quality slider.
What size should a website image be?
Measure the space it occupies in the layout and double it. A photo shown 600px wide wants a 1200px file. Anything beyond that is downloaded by every visitor and then thrown away by the browser.
Can I resize several images at once?
Not here — this tool takes one image so the preview can be honest about it. For a batch, the image converter and compressor both take up to 50 files at a time.
Does it keep transparency?
If you save as PNG or WebP, yes. JPG has no transparency at all, so any transparent area is filled white on the way out. The page says which is which under the format selector.
