How it works
What changed in 2023
Google restricted FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites. For everyone else the markup is still read, still valid and still parsed by other engines and assistants — but it will not put an accordion under your listing, and any tool implying otherwise is selling you something.
The content has to be on the page
Every question and answer in the markup must also be visible to somebody reading the page. Marking up content that is not there is a policy violation rather than a clever shortcut, and it is the most common reason a site gets a structured-data manual action.
Answers are escaped properly
An answer containing `</script>` would otherwise end the script block early and drop the rest of your content into the page as markup. Every `<` is escaped, so you can paste whatever your answer actually says.

Add and remove rows; empty ones are simply left out of the output rather than producing blank entries.
Duplicates are caught
The same question twice is an error, because it is nearly always a copy-paste that was meant to be edited.
Honest about the payoff
The warnings say what the markup will and will not do. That is worth more than a green tick that means nothing.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Write the answers for a reader first and the markup second. Answers written for a rich result read like they were, and the rich result is not coming.
- One FAQPage block per page. Several compete and none of them helps.
- Keep answers to a few sentences. A wall of text in an answer is a sign the question should have been its own page.
- The markup is still worth adding: assistants, other search engines and internal site search all read it, and none of them made the 2023 change.
- If you want something that can still produce a rich result, look at HowTo for instructions or Product for a shop page — those were not restricted.

Does FAQ schema still work?
It is still valid markup and still parsed. What it no longer does, for most sites, is produce the expandable questions under a Google result — that has been limited to well-known government and health sites since August 2023.
Is it still worth adding?
For most sites, mildly. It costs nothing, it is read by other engines and by assistants, and it makes the structure of the page explicit. Just do not expect it to change your listing.
Do the questions have to appear on the page?
Yes, all of them, visible to an ordinary reader. Hidden content in structured data is a policy violation and a common cause of manual actions.
Can I put HTML in an answer?
A limited set of tags is allowed by the specification, and the escaping here handles them safely. Keep it simple — a paragraph or a list, not a layout.
